Overview

In a continuous effort to keep alumni connected and updated about opportunities provided through the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Center, increase support for LGBTQ+ Red Hawks, and provide mentorship and networking opportunities, the Office of Alumni Relations in collaboration with the LGBTQ Center has developed an LGBTQ and allied Alumni Network. This endeavor provides the opportunity for LGBTQ and allied alumni to engage with and give back to Montclair State University students, and show support for the commitment of the university to ensuring equity and social justice for the LGBTQ+ community. This group serves an integral role in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing programs and activities including networking events, panels, scholarship development, and more.

About the Center

Adding to the services offered to the University community, Montclair State University officially launched the LGBTQ Center on January 12, 2009. A branch of the University’s Center for Student Involvement, the Center works to create an open, accepting, and affirming atmosphere on campus for every member of the campus community.

According to Fatima DeCarvalho, Associate Dean for Student Life, "The LGBTQ Center is a tangible representation of Montclair State University's commitment to social justice and equity for our students. The center provides opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students to actively engage in campus life and opportunities for allies to join in the continuous effort to provide an inclusive, safe, and open campus environment."

The LGBTQ Center offers various weekly drop-in clubs and groups focusing on topics such as coming out, gender identity/expression, and the intersections of race, culture and sexual identity. Also, it houses a Peer Educator volunteer program with six different positions for students to develop life-long personal and professional skills: Pride Board, Lavender Leaders, Peer Mentors, Facilitators, Office Staff, and Graduate Interns. The Center provides training programs for students, faculty and staff, like Safe Space, oversees an LGBTQ+ residential community, and works to ensure that LGBTQ+ folks on campus feel supported through education, advocacy, support and student development.
