Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe and “cello goddess” Maya Beiser honor the act of spinning thread in their new piece, which celebrates the essential handiwork performed by women to keep us warm and clothed for centuries. Song has always accompanied the act of spinning. To illuminate and pay homage to the craft, Wolfe and Beiser create a sonic universe for three cellos accompanied by multimedia projections and textiles by artist Laurie Olinder. According to Beiser, “My artistic collaboration with Julia Wolfe goes back over 25 years. […] I found in Julia’s music a rare quality – combining folk, rock and classical elements in a distinct and relentless energy. This collaboration is one that has been in our minds for many years, and we are thrilled to now embark on this journey together.”
